Scope
Recent and on-going advances in the field of wireless technologies are turning huge research interest into tremendous commercial success. WLAN networks and WiMAX are the most notable examples of it. Over the last few years, WLANs have been offering effective extensions to wired networks and IEEE 802.11n is now being developed with a target data rate of 100 Mbit/s. For broadband mobile radio access, the IEEE 802.16 standardization efforts are being complemented by the work of the WiMAX Forum to test and develop interoperability profiles. Along with the ever-increasing capacity of such wireless networks, many value-added multimedia-rich services (collaborative IP tools, VoIP, video streaming, push services) are emerging. The success of these services depends on the way network operators, wireless access equipment vendors and service providers will deal with the stringent constraints imposed by the underlying wireless architecture. Seamless and ubiquitous coverage and QoS provisioning are the crucial points to face.

On the other hand, wireless sensor networking has continued to receive significant R&D interest in both military and commercial applications. Mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET) has become a key enabler for reliable, mobile, secure net-centric operations. Cross-layer protocol engineering has attracted several researchers to investigate new approaches to enhance the performance of wireless networks. Mesh networks, and their related issues, such as auto-configuration, privacy and security, capacity and range enhancement, are the focus of many researchers and industry professionals.  Finally, satellites represent the key technology to fulfill the goal of global ubiquitous communication systems, for applications and services that adapt to different needs and geographic environments. The interworking of all such wireless infrastructures has to ensure a complete and global coverage and delineates an additional and challenging research axis.

Stemming from the belief that new opportunities in the wireless networking area are still to be found and important challenges are still to be faced, this symposium intends to provide an opportunity for experts, from academia and industry alike, to meet and discuss recent achievements and remaining hurdles in current and future wireless communication networks. Prospective authors are therefore solicited to submit original works in the wireless networking area, spanning from the MAC to the application layer. The symposium co-chairs warmly suggest that papers addressing physical layer themes be forwarded to different, more appropriate symposia. Submissions are welcome from academia, industry, and government organizations. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Presentation Style
The Globecom 2009 Technical Program Committee will go through a rigorous process to review all the papers submitted and select the best ones among them. The accepted papers will be presented in the conference either in a lecture style or in a poster style format. This distinction has no relationship with the quality of the accepted papers whatsoever. It is purely due to the limitations of the conference rooms available for lecture style presentations. Papers will be selected for lecture-style or poster-style presentation, solely based on the need to ensure topic homogeneity in lecture-style sessions.   All accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings and IEEExplore without any indication of the presentation mode.
